Future Alternative - Renewable Energy, Solar, Wind, Biomass, Ocean, Hydro Power...

Alternative energy is any energy source that is an alternative to fossil fuel. These alternatives are intended to address concerns about fossil fuels, such as its high carbon dioxide emissions, an important factor in global warming. Marine energy, hydroelectric, wind, geothermal and solar power are all alternative sources of energy.

Marine energy or marine power refers to the energy carried by ocean waves, tides, salinity, and ocean temperature differences. The movement of water in the world’s oceans creates a vast store of kinetic energy, or energy in motion. Some of this energy can be harnessed to generate electricity to power homes, transport and industries.

Hydroelectricity is electricity produced from hydropower. In 2015, hydropower generated 16.6% of the world's total electricity and 70% of all renewable electricity, and was expected to increase about 3.1% each year for the next 25 years.

0 0

Wind power or wind energy is the use of air flow through wind turbines to provide the mechanical power to turn electric generators and traditionally to do other work, like milling or pumping. Wind power is a sustainable and renewable alternative to burning fossil fuels, and has much less effect on the environment.

Solar power is the conversion of energy from sunlight into electricity, either directly using photovoltaics (PV), indirectly using concentrated solar power, or a combination. Concentrated solar power systems use lenses or mirrors and tracking systems to focus a large area of sunlight into a small beam. Photovoltaic cells convert light into an electric current using the photovoltaic effect.

Hydrogen energy burns clean and can be endlessly renewed, as it can be drawn from water and crop plants. Hydrogen power would thus be a sustainable energy resource to be found within the US’ own infrastructure
help with the commercial development of hydrogen powered fuel cells, which would be usable, lternative energy initiative, he determined that the government would develop five “Sun Grant” centers for concentrated research. Oregon State University has the honor of having been selected as one of these centers, and has been allocated government grants of $20 million for each of the next four years in order to carry out its mission.

OSU will lead the way in researching alternative energy as it represents the interests of the Pacific Islands, the US’ Pacific Territories, and nine western states. OSU President Edward Ray says, the research being conducted through OSU’s Sun Grant center will contribute directly to our meeting President Bush’s challenge for energy independence.

Specific research into alternative energy being conducted at OSU by varios teams of scientists right now include a project to figure out how to efficiently convert such products as straw into a source of renewable biomass fuel, and another one aimed at studying how to efficiently convert wood fibers into liquid fuel.

“Energy Crop Plantation” in the entire United States. This Plantation spans approximately 130 acres and is home to over 250,000 planted trees including cottonwoods (native to the area) and eucalyptus (which are non-invasive) along with various row crops such as soybeans. This organization of “super trees” was brought into being as a result of the University’s joint research with other agencies including Shell, the US Department of Energy,

the Common Purpose Institute, and groups of various individuals who are working to develop alternative energy sources (those not dependent on fossil fuels) for the future. This research is focused on the planting and processing of biomass energy supplies from fast-growing crops known as “closed loop biomass” or simply “energy crops”. The project seeks to develop “power plants” such as wood-pulp or wood-fiber providing plants; clean biogas to be used by industries; plants such as surgarcane which can be used for ethanol development; and crops such as soybeans for biodiesel fuel production.

We should be doing everything possible to develop geothermal energy technologies. This is a largely untapped area of tremendous alternative energy potential, as it simply taps the energy being naturally produced by the Earth herself. Vast amounts of power are present below the surface crust on which we move and have our being.

Geothermal Power Station in Iceland Geothermal energy is thermal energy generated and stored in the Earth. Thermal energy is the energy that determines the temperat''ure of matter. The geothermal energy of the Earth's crust originates from the original formation of the planet and from radioactive decay of materials (in currently uncertain but possibly roughly equal The high temperature and pressure in Earth's interior cause some rock to melt and solid mantle to behave plastically, resulting in portions of the mantle convecting upward since it is lighter than the surrounding rock. Rock and water is heated in the crust, sometimes up to 370 °C.

Geothermal power is power generated by geothermal energy. Technologies in use include dry steam power stations, flash steam power stations and binary cycle power stations. Geothermal electricity generation is currently used in 26 countries, while geothermal heating is in use in 70 countries.

Energy development is the field of activities focused on obtaining sources of energy from natural resources. These activities include production of conventional, alternative and renewable sources of energy, and for the recovery and reuse of energy that would otherwise be wasted. Energy conservation and efficiency measures reduce the demand for energy development, and can have benefits to society with improvements to environmental issues.

Renewable energy is energy that is collected from renewable resources, which are naturally replenished on a human timescale, such as sunlight, wind, rain, tides, waves, and geothermal heat. Renewable energy often provides energy in four important areas: electricity generation, air and water heating/cooling, transportation, and rural (off-grid) energy services.

Sustainable energy is a principle in which human use of energy "meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs." Sustainable energy strategies generally have two pillars: cleaner methods of producing energy and energy conservation.

Geothermal heating is the direct use of geothermal energy for some heating applications. Humans have taken advantage of geothermal heat this way since the Paleolithic era. Approximately seventy countries made direct use of a total of 270 PJ of geothermal heating in 2004. As of 2007, 28 GW of geothermal heating capacity is installed around the world, satisfying 0.07% of global primary energy consumption. Thermal efficiency is high since no energy conversion is needed, but capacity factors tend to be low since the heat is mostly needed in the winter.

Approximately 40% of primary energy is from renewable energy sources in New Zealand. Approximately 80% of electricity comes from renewable energy, primarily hydropower and geothermal power.
About 85% of the total primary energy supply in Iceland is derived from domestically produced renewable energy sources. This is the highest share of renewable energy in any national total energy budget.
Renewable energy in Bangladesh refers to the use of renewable energy to generate electricity in Bangladesh. The current renewable energy comes from biogas that is originated from biomass, hydro power, solar and wind.

The developing nations of Africa are popular locations for the application of renewable energy technology. Currently, many nations already have small-scale solar, wind, and geothermal devices in operation providing energy to urban and rural populations. These types of energy production are especially useful in remote locations because of the excessive cost of transporting electricity from large-scale power plants. The applications of renewable energy technology has the potential to alleviate many of the problems that face Africans every day, especially if done in a sustainable manner that prioritizes human rights.

Mercury NZ Limited is a New Zealand electricity generation and electricity retailing company. All of the company's electricity generation is renewable. It owns and operates nine hydroelectric generating stations on the Waikato River and five geothermal plants in the Taupo area.
Renewable energy in the United Kingdom can be divided into production for electricity, heat, and transport.
In 2013, renewable energy provided 26.44% of the total electricity in the Philippines and 19,903 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of electrical energy out of a total demand of 75,266 gigawatt-hours. The Philippines is a net importer of fossil fuels. For the sake of energy security, there is momentum to develop renewable energy sources.

The types available include hydropower, geothermal power, wind power, solar power and biomass power. The government of the Philippines has legislated a number of policies in order to increase the use of renewable energy by the country. Energy in Kenya describes energy and electricity production, consumption, import and export in Kenya. Kenya's current effective installed electricity capacity is 2,651 MW, with peak demand of 1,802 MW, as at June 2018. At that time, demand was rising at a calculated rate of 3.6 percent annually, given that peak demand was 1,770 MW, at the beginning of 2018. Electricity supply is predominantly sourced from hydro and fossil fuel (thermal) sources.

A geothermal heat pump or ground source heat pump (GSHP) is a central heating and/or cooling system that transfers heat to or from the ground. Electric power systems consist of generation plants of different energy sources, transmission networks, and distribution lines. Each of these components can have environmental impacts at multiple stages of their development and use including in their construction, during the generation of electricity, and in their decommissioning and disposal.

We can split these impacts into operational impacts and construction impacts. This page looks exclusively at the operational environmental impact of electricity generation. The page is organized by energy source and includes impacts such as water usage, emissions, local pollution, and wildlife displacement.

As the Earth spins toward the west, it slides underneath the air in the atmosphere, giving it from our perspective a generally eastward direction. That easterly wind sweeps over the rocky mountains and then rushes back down across the Great Plains, creating one of the largest wind corridors in the world. And in the last 10 years, investments in commercial wind energy have boomed across the United States. Economies of scale have started to kick in, causing the price of wind turbines to drop. They also cost little to maintain and operate and help create energy independence for smaller communities and provide a revenue source for local ranchers who lease out the land to the energy companies.

They take up a lot of land, unlike wind farms mentioned earlier, if you have a solar farm, you can’t use that for other things.

Every other energy source creates electricity by using heat or steam or water or wind to turn a turbine. Solar literally just collects the energy coming out of the sun and repurposes it. When asked if he was interested in fusion power as a source of energy, Elon Musk famously said that we already have a massive fusion reactor in the sky just feeding us energy every day. All we have to do is collect it.

Renewable Energy - Solar Vs Wind

Existing types of alternative energy

  • Hydro electricity captures energy from falling water.
  • Nuclear energy uses nuclear fission to release energy stored in the atomic bonds of heavy elements.
  • Wind energy is the generation of electricity from wind, commonly by using propeller-like turbines.
  • Solar energy is the use of energy from the sun. Heat from the sun can be used for solar thermal applications or light can be converted into electricity via photovoltaic devices.
  • Geothermal energy is the use of the earth's internal heat to boil water for heating buildings or generating electricity.
  • Biofuel and ethanol are plant-derived gasoline substitutes for powering vehicles.
  • Hydrogen can be used as a carrier of energy, produced by various technologies such as cracking of hydrocarbons or water electrolysis.

Future Alternative /Renewable Energy : Solar, Wind, Biomass, Ocean, Hydro Power ... (Top Truths) Future of Electric Power - Renewable Clean Energy - Go Green - Alternative Energy Perhaps one of the most pressing issues we humans must all face in the coming years is how to continue to power our lives whilst our limited resources like coal and oil are eventually exhausted. Fortunately, there have been many developments in the field of renewable energy. The most commonly known forms are of course solar and wind energy, but there are many more possible alternatives, too. Collectively, these will shape The Future Of Electric Power. Fuel Cells Fuel cells produce energy through chemical reactions that combine hydrogen with oxygen.

Oyster

With over 70% of the world’s surface covered in water, it’s a surprise that tidal wave energy was left behind in the race for renewable energy. Oyster is an attempt to bring this form of energy back to the forefront.

When a hydrogen-rich fuel such as natural gas or biogas flows through a fuel cell and reacts with oxygen, it produces electricity, heat and water. Fuel cells, which emit about half of the emission of a fossil fuel power plant, aren’t cheap enough to become a primary power source, but they are being used by a growing number of companies to provide backup power as well as reduce their carbon footprints. Fuel cells are also making their way into the automotive world to create zero-emissions cars. Geothermal Power Humans have been harnessing the power of super-hot steams underneath the Earth’s surface for as long as records show, but the first geothermal power generator wasn’t built until 1904 in Italy. The first geothermal power plant in the United States came online in 1921 to help run a hot spring resort at The Geysers in northern California. The Geysers, which covers almost 20,000 acres, is the world’s largest geothermal field and is now home to nearly a dozen power plants. Geothermal power makes up just 3% of the USA’s renewable energy supply. Ocean Power The rhythmic and powerful movements of the ocean current and waves can drive electric generators to produce a steady stream of vast amounts of power, which would then be transported to land via cables. This presents an extremely hopeful promise for clean energy. The catch?

Developing the equipment that would effectively capture all of that mechanical energy whilst withstanding the corrosive salt water and other natural elements out in the ocean is proving to be highly challenging. There are currently no commercial ocean energy power plants in the US, though a number of research and pilot projects have taken place in California, Oregon, Hawaii and New Jersey. Those projects test equipment designs, which resemble everything from giant jellyfish to a snake, to see how well they perform in the rough environment and whether they could efficiently produce enough energy to justify the steep costs of installing and operating them.

Hydropower The most common type of hydroelectric power plant uses a dam on a river to store water in a reservoir. Water released from the reservoir flows through a turbine, spinning it, which in turn activates a generator to produce electricity. However, hydroelectric power doesn't necessarily require a large dam. Some hydroelectric power plants just use a small canal to channel the river water through a turbine. Hydropower is one of the oldest sources of electricity in human history and is used by every state in the USA. The world’s first commercial hydropower plant came online on the Fox River of Appleton, Wisconsin, in 1882. Hydropower is also the largest source of renewable energy, accounting for just over 6% of US electricity generation and 92% of renewable energy production. Washington state, in particular, relies on hydropower for more than 70% of its electricity. Biomass Electricity produced by plants or animal by-products is known as biomass energy.

Biomass power plants directly burn feedstock such as wood chips, agricultural waste, some types of garbage or animal manure in order to produce electricity. It’s also possible to convert the materials into combustible gases and then burn them to generate power. Biomass power accounts for 12% of the USA’s renewable energy supply. Biomass is used in almost every nation in the world for electricity generation. Sweden, for example, relies on biomass for 30% of its energy.

But the argument that we should stick with something like coal because PV panels create greenhouse gasses is frankly absurd. And some PV panels require rare Elements like those found in cadmium telluride (CdTe) or copper iridium gallium selenide (CIGS), which is all the more reason to recycle the panels properly. The big hangups come in the construction of the solar panels because there are some hazardous materials used that need to be properly disposed of at the end of the panel’s life span.
